Several small vernal pools are located within these forested habitats, providing breeding opportunities for the spotted salamander and other amphibians in the early spring before the pools dry up. In the east, riparian forests dominated by sugar maple grow along Sawmill Creek, while American beech and other mixed hardwoods dominate the forests on the eastern slopes overlooking the creek. The adjacent open meadows with various goldenrods, asters, and rushes support numerous small wetland habitats. Prior to acquisition the western parts of the Preserve were used in crop production, and the forests here consist mainly of pioneering trees and shrubs such as eastern cottonwood and black willow. Sawmill Creek Preserve consists of numerous distinct habitat types, ranging from young forests and meadow habitats in the west, to extensive forested areas in the east. With just under a mile of Sawmill Creek flowing within it, and thousands of feet of other small waterways traversing the property, this 154-acre preserve provides a significant degree of protection for the region’s natural resources. Sawmill Creek is a major tributary entering the Meander Reservoir, and protection of this important resource is one of the reasons that the Sawmill Creek Preserve was established. in Canfield Township, Sawmill Creek Preserve was established in 2002 with a grant through the Water Resource Restoration Sponsor Program. Out in the channel there are swags of darker, smooth water, like open water amid ice-floes. The sun has come out in this dark June, bathing the 2 beds and half the lawn, creating a magic of trembling chiaroscuro in the apple-boughs. The flower-beds, irregular, one eye-shaped, the other a rough pentagon, each ringed by mossy rocks, have been cleared. The old apple-tree reaches for light from the left side of the window, the green fruit hanging in clusters among its curling leaves. They came in noisily, calling and flapping, paddling even as they hit the water, stirring it to foamy green. Offshore a flock of Canada geese has landed by the bald crown of the tidal rock. The great picture-window, at which I sit, looks out on the little lawn, hemmed in by a sloping laurel hedge, then a fringe of heterogeneous overgrown plants at the top of the bluff dropping to the high-tide water. So it is peaceful here: and peaceful outside. An isolated creak of a floorboard somewhere, and otherwise, just the high-frequency trill of my own ears. From the kitchen: a single plop of a water-drop falling from the faucet. I made some notes in my prose sketchbook:Īlmost silent: faint cawing of crows outside now the quiet reverberation of a boat engine here in the living-room I hear only a tiny electric sound: maybe a clock running. I took a lunch break at about 12:30, then went to sit on one of the deep-rose loveseats by the picture window. When Mom and Jackie had left, I worked on. I'll go through every transaction in order to get good data to plug into the master Excel workbook. I sat at the dining-table and proceeded to enter bank-statement data into Quicken on Mom's laptop. I drove out at 10:30, as she and Jackie (who had taken today off work) were preparing to go to a lunch date in Port Coquitlam. I just got the facts: the act was Edison Lighthouse, and the year was 1970.Īfter my morning notes ( Rubicon, A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ), I had my own office-work to go to: estate accounting at Mom's house. So I said it was not later than 1971, probably 1970. I knew it came out earlier, I thought maybe the late 1960s. Kimmie remembered lying on her mother's bed listening to it in 1974. We tried to remember who did the song ("the Cowsills?" I guessed "No," said Kim, with a definite shake of her head), and when it came out. This morning Kimmie and I paused to listen to "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)", and were taken suddenly back to our childhood years. This morning I was the one to switch the radio on-a cheap little Radio Shack job that sits on top of my upright chest of drawers. JACK-FM is the radio station Kimmie listens to in the morning as she gets ready for work. It was pouring a warm rain as she left for the office. Kimmie told me that on JACK-FM this morning they confirmed that this has been the "darkest" June in recorded history, with just 149 hours of sunlight (at that time), compared with the previous record-holder, June 1953, which had 150-odd. We put together a panel of Workspace experts who have G Suite Legacy Free accounts to discuss the impact of this decision, Google's response and general surprise at the backlash, as well as a possible new offering for a Google Workspace Family Plan, and downgrade options. We have added our family members, have over a decade of email history on our accounts, and have purchased content on the various services offered by Google using these accounts. What they did not anticipate, was angering their most loyal customer base, us admins who have been using Google Apps from the very beginning. This was likely an attempt by Google to recoup the lost money from businesses getting away with not paying for a decade, and bring them on to the updated Google Workspace paid plans. Google Workspace has made the decision to stop offering G Suite Legacy Free to the grandfathered in users who have been using it for many years now. It is unknown at this point if those with only a few accounts will be able to add as many as needed or if they will be capped at 10. I still show in my billing dashboard that I have 41 available licenses, which I already had from many years ago. I have switched one of my legacy accounts over to the free plan and had no issue adding a new user. That sounds ominous, and we are digging in to see if we can clarify what would quantify business purposes, although generally non commercial means anything that is not used to generate money.Īs far as how many users will be allowed on the free plan, currently they have not mentioned a limit. This section is in need of major improvement. Addie plans to break his heart and drive him away. Luc thinks he's won, but Addie knows that her new deal only requires her to stay with him for as long as he desires. He publishes the book, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, as fiction and without an author. Henry lives and writes a book based on the stories that Addie has told him. Luc refuses until Addie promises herself to him in exchange for releasing Henry. Addie calls on Luc to beg him to change his deal with Henry. In the present, Addie learns that Henry's deal was only for a year. He says it requires her to surrender, and Addie lashes out at him and they fight. In 1980, Addie asks Luc to release her from her deal. They end up in an affair which lasts for years, and Addie falls for him. When he comes to visit in 1952, he admits to wanting her. She finally uses it in 1944 when she gets captured during WWII. In 1914, Luc admits to liking Addie's company and gives her a wooden ring so she can call on him. Addie accuses him of being lonely and in want of company. He occasionally will rescue her from a sticky situation, claiming he wants to be the one to break her. Addie travels across Europe, with Luc visiting usually on July 29, but he skips some years. Meanwhile, in the past, the book describes Addie and Luc's relationship over the course of over a hundred years from the 1700s to the end of the 1800s. Henry begins to write down Addie's story, with Addie dictating. He realizes that people love him, but they also don't really see him. His exes ask for a second chance and he's offered a job he's completely unqualified for. Since then, everyone sees him as whatever they want to see. After getting his heartbroken, he asks to be loved in exchange for his soul. To her surprise, Henry admits to Addie that he, too, made a deal with the devil a year ago. When Henry's friends don't recognize her, Addie tells him the truth about her bargain with the devil. In present day, Addie sees Henry again, who recognizes her, and they go on a date. Addie learns to survive and navigate her new world. He takes on the form and name, Luc, of an imaginary stranger Addie once daydreamed about. The devil appears yearly, each time asking Addie if she's ready to relinquish her life and her soul. She walks into a used bookstore to steal a book, but is caught by the clerk, Henry. The exception is a wooden ring, which she cannot get rid of. She also cannot keep a home or keep possessions. She can't give people her real name or tell her story. In present day, Addie survives by stealing and sneaking into others' apartments to sleep. As soon as she leaves their sight, they forget her. She is given eternal life, but no one can remember her (she wanted to "live freely"). Instead, she offers the devil her soul when she is done with it, and he accepts. As a gift, she offers her favorite possession, a carved wooden ring, but the devil rejects it. Addie asks to live freely and to have more time. On July 29th, the night of her wedding, she prays to the old gods, the night falls and 'the devil' answers. In 1714, Addie is 23 and engaged, but she longs to be free. Estele also told her she had seven freckles, one for each man she would love some day. A local woman, Estele, taught her about the old gods, but warned her not to call on them after dark. While ESG fund managers may have good reasons for building their portfolios the way they do, the gap between the complex strategies they’re applying and the expectations regular people have of what ESG should do is starting to be a problem that’s playing out in real life. “And then you start looking, you’re thinking, why is Facebook in there?” “I don’t want to over-ham it too much, but I felt like I’d almost been had because I thought I was buying into the more ethical side of this,” he said. But finding an ESG fund without big tech was almost impossible, he said. One stock he really didn’t want to own was Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. When Neil Baker, a 37-year-old who works in the UK construction industry, started looking for ESG investments less than two years ago, he said he was dismayed at what he found. In the US, they lost 16 per cent, which was only marginally better than the S&P 500.īut perhaps more importantly, doubts about how much good ESG actually does risk becoming a more lasting turn-off for regular people. By the second week of June, European ESG equity funds had, on average, lost 14 per cent, compared with an 11 per cent decline in the Stoxx Europe 600 index. In May, investors made the biggest-ever monthly redemptions from US exchange-traded ESG funds, Bloomberg Intelligence estimates.Īnd ESG returns, which rode out the worst lockdown-induced selloffs, also are starting to sag. It's the worst showing since before the pandemic began and was followed by another decline in April, Bank of America analysts reported. Flows into ESG funds globally slumped 36 per cent in the first quarter, according to data provided by Morningstar Inc. The cracks in the ESG firmament appear to be widening elsewhere, too. After attracting huge amounts of money for three straight years, demand for ESG is cooling. What’s more, some of the biggest names in finance are facing probes of their ESG businesses, with Goldman Sachs Asset Management and the investment arm of Deutsche Bank AG among the most prominent. Retail investors are slowly starting to look under the hood of the US$40 trillion environmental, social and governance industry that’s increasingly steering their savings, and many aren’t liking what they see. But there’s one group whose growing disapproval might be the ultimate game changer. ESG has become a punching bag for the far right, for disgruntled corporate executives and even industry insiders. However, it should go without saying that once you’ve chosen a favorite app of your own, you should pay for the IAP and support that developer’s work. The upside of free-to-download Reddit clients is that you get to test the entire field without paying a dime. On the value front, what we’ve discovered is that nearly every app in our tests was free to download but offered some type of in-app purchase, typically to remove ads and/or unlock features. If they did, we wouldn’t have written this article and you wouldn’t be here anyway. The whole point of third-party Reddit apps is that you get to bypass having to use the site itself or Reddit’s own app, neither of which offer the greatest experience around. With that second rule in mind, we’re back with a new and improved review of the best Reddit clients for iOS.Ī lot has changed in the two years since the first edition of this article. Rule #2: Use an awesome app to keep up with those subreddits, and maybe do the occasional browsing elsewhere. When you find a community you love, cling to it for all its worth. Rule #1: Stick to a handful of subreddits that cater to your exact interests. Nevertheless, you can still have a great time browsing Reddit, as long as you follow two rules: Even in “normal” subreddits, it’s hard to have an innocuous discussion anymore without it devolving into a Facebook-esque political debate or whatever else people feel like arguing about. While that’s no longer the case, there are still some deep, dark corners of Reddit that should never see the light of day. When we published the first version of this review back in April 2016, I wrote about how I spent years avoiding the site like the plague. Reddit is a tough place to love sometimes. It’s a thoughtfully designed, customizable, and easy-to-navigate experience that just managed to beat out our previous pick, Narwhal (although it was such a close race between the two that it almost doesn’t matter). After extensive testing and far more Redditing than should be considered healthy, we’ve concluded that Apollo for Reddit is the premier choice for most people. It’s been two years since we first reviewed the landscape of Reddit apps for iPhone and iPad.
